    Garrison employees gathered at the Family Resource Center, Friday, for an information-packed, 90-minute Winter Safety Stand-Up Day presented by the Installation Safety Office. Topics covered, such as winter preparedness and portable generator safety, applied to the coming season. However, general safety information, including lifting techniques, CPR and Automatic External Defibrillator demonstrations were also featured. Garrison workers shuffled through nine stations -- spending roughly 10 minutes at each -- to ask questions and get close-up safety instruction from Fort Campbell experts.

    In a clearing in the back woods of Fort Campbell, Master Sgt. Anthony Codgill took his aim, fired and connected with an eight-point buck. A simple scene, until one discovers that Cogdill took the shot using a sip and puff device connected to his rifle. Cogdill is in the end stages of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. The terminal illness is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. The degeneration leads to lack of muscle movement, paralysis, as well as difficulty speaking, swallowing and breathing. There is currently no cure for ALS.

    Wassom Middle School eighth grader Drabin Morgan wants to save the planet by recycling one piece of trash at a time. "If we don't recycle, one day our planet is going to be gone and it's going to be our fault," said the 14-year-old student. "So, I think helping the earth also helps everybody on the earth." Morgan and her peers help to preserve the Earth through the Fort Campbell school's new recycling program. Launched in September, Wassom has partnered with TerraCycle, an international upcycling and recycling company that collects difficult-to-recycle packaging and products and repurposes the material into affordable, innovative products, according to terracycle.com.

    FORT BRAGG, N.C. -- Countless hours of training ensures that a Paratrooper knows what to do when lives are in danger. Most expect to have to exercise that training in combat, where bullets, rockets and bombs threaten the lives of their brothers and sisters-in-arms. Sometimes though, disaster strikes at home and a U. S. Army Soldier is particularly equipped to respond. One Falcon Paratrooper has proven he can be counted on when the going gets tough. Spc. Michael D. Parmelee, an infantryman assigned to the 1st Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, received the Soldier's Medal during a ceremony held Nov. 26. He was recommended for the award for rushing to the rescue of two people inside of a burning vehicle while he was home on leave. The Soldier's Medal recognizes a Soldier that has performed an act of heroism outside of conflict with the enemy.
