Concert violinist becomes U.S. Army infantryman, paratrooper

At age 24, Minnesota native Ean Ulrich had already played the violin for 20 years when he answered a calling to help people by enlisting in the Army. The former concert violinist is now an airborne infantryman serving with the 82nd Airborne Division's 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

Seven First Army Division East noncommissioned officers competed at the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club board, at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J., January 25, in hopes of proving themselves to be among the top NCOs within the United States Army. "Becoming a Sergeant Audie Murphy Club member is a clear demonstration to your subordinates that you're one of the best NCOs in the Army," said First Army Division East's senior enlisted advisor, Command Sgt. Maj. Dennis E. Defreese. "By doing this and showing them how you've pushed yourself, you're giving them something to aspire to. These noncommissioned officers are a tangible representation of the top one-percent within our NCO corps."

Following a Department of Defense mandate, Anniston's Army Depot's Voluntary Protection Program journey began in September 2010, when the depot's management team and AFGE Local 1945 formulated a plan to work toward VPP Star status. At that time, the depot was ISO 9001, 14001 and 18001 certified. This gave the depot team confidence that star status could be achieved if the same amount of dedication, effort and persistence was put into the VPP journey.

Wiesbaden Middle School confronts profanity, respect issue

WIESBADEN, Germany - When a sixth-grade boy at Wiesbaden Middle School gave a girl a letter filled with profanity and Julie Wahlers found out about it, she put on her victim advocate hat and responded. Wahlers, victim advocate for the Army Community Service Family Advocacy Program, put together a team of five advocates to speak to sixth-graders at the school, and they met with the students Jan. 16. Members of the team split up to speak to the boys and girls separately.

Del Din goes for LEED Gold Certification

Achieving Silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification doesn't seem to be good enough for the new Del Din base slated to be fully operational in June. The $308 million, design-build MILCON project awarded in March 2008 has a contractual requirement to achieve Silver LEED certification as defined by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). However, because of the team's efforts and a firm commitment to aim higher, a Gold LEED rating now appears within reach without costing the Army another dime.

The 7th Infantry Division hosted their first ever Weapons, Ammunition and Devices Symposium Jan. 24 and 25, at various locations on Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The first days of the symposium featured speakers and displays, while the second day afforded soldiers a chance for more hands-on training at the Engagement Skills Trainer 2000 and with a live-fire range.

The Corps of Engineers teams up with Bass Pro Shops for 2013 water safety projects

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Bass Pro Shops are kicking off the 2013 water recreation season with plans for new joint projects to help spread the word on water and boating safety, as well as environmental protection. The two organizations signed a partnership agreement late last year to develop potential projects that can be accomplished in the near term and in the future, such as those that improve fish habitat and focus on water and boater safety education. They are now ready to implement new measures to make the agreement a reality.
