FORT LEE, Va. (May 22, 2013) -- The U.S. military suicide rate has steadily climbed over the past three years. In 2012, more than 349 active duty troops ended their lives, nearly 100 more than the number of troops who died in combat the same year and a 15 percent increase from 2011. One hundred and eighty-two of those deaths were Soldiers.

Healing help is available for Fort Belvoir community members dealing with personal issues such as domestic abuse and substance abuse through the Family Life Ministry and Training Center for counseling. The program provides couples, Family and individual counseling services to help clients overcome their problems. The services are available to active-duty military members, retirees, Reservists, Guardsmen, Department of the Army civilians and Family members. The office adheres to the Chief of Chaplains Confidentially Policy which provides clients confidentiality during counseling sessions, according to Chaplain (Maj.) There is a bust of his likeness, a statue in the middle of an Air Force Administrative Annex in the Kaiserslautern Military Community in faraway Germany, an ocean away from his hometown roots and a continent away from where he is buried in an unmarked grave. The face and shoulder representation is meant as a reminder of the namesake, often overlooked and rarely thought upon from a long ago war referred to as the 'forgotten war'.

Within the early days of their deployment, a team of chaplain's assistants came together with a plan: a mutual agreement making something beautiful for all to enjoy, helping make days here in Afghanistan brighter. Within their offices at Forward Operating Base Salerno, Afghanistan, the team of assistants from various battalions within the 3rd Brigade Combat Team "Rakkasans," 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), decided to restore the chapel after it had been heavily damaged in an attack in the summer of 2012. Located in a throughway, the building's only distinguishing features are its tiny steeple and the zebra patterned wood on its exterior. Like battle wounds, the building stood resilient with scars of unpainted wood. When the team arrived from Fort Campbell, Ky, to the large FOB in eastern Afghanistan, much of the chapel was already repaired. However, one feature remained absent. "When we arrived here, the chapel was all boarded up and didn't look like a chapel," said U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Eric Esposito, brigade chaplain's assistant. "All the windows were covered with wood. It was hard to distinguish where the chapel was."

Before the sun began to rise over the Afghan mountains, music and prayer filled the air as service members and civilians gathered to celebrate Easter Sunday at Forward Operating Base Gamberi, March 31. The early morning service began with the invocation by U.S. Army Chaplain (Maj.) Steve Prost, brigade chaplain, assigned to 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, and native of Platte City, Mo., said there couldn't have been more perfect weather. The service featured a pastoral prayer, scripture reading, and a musical performance by U.S. Army Sgt. Amelia Shields, unit supply specialist assigned to Company C, 27th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, based out of Fort Hood, Texas.

This year's celebration of Women's History Month has a deeper meaning for female chaplains in the armed forces as it serves as the 40th anniversary of women in military chaplaincy. During the last 40 years, female chaplains' have overcome differences in religious beliefs in their pursuit of equality and have assumed various leadership positions.

The discipleship program on Fort Huachuca uses high-energy activities and games, Scripture memorization and interactive Bible lessons to develop each child's relationship with Jesus Christ, according to Fred Robinson, installation director of religious education.

In late February, members of the First Army Division East Chaplain's team held a Strong Bonds event focused on the 'Got Your Back' concept for single Soldiers, in Annapolis, M.D. The Strong Bonds program, 'Got Your Back,' is geared toward assisting Soldiers in better understanding themselves and communication abilities with peers, boyfriends, girlfriends, family and friends.
