May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, and while the nationwide campaign sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration urges drivers to "share the road" with motorcyclists, Army officials are placing greater emphasis on personal responsibility while riding.

MCoE to model training after the tenets of the University System, reorganizing to a Functional Brigade alignment, said Gary Jones, director of Public Affairs for the Maneuver Center of Excellence. "This will streamline brigade structures to achieve maximum efficiency and reduce redundancy," he said. "Branch proponency will remain an essential part of our MCoE culture during the reorganization, which is now in progress. It most importantly facilitates the MCoE objective to develop agile adaptive leaders in functional training programs to ensure the combat effectiveness of the force," said Jones, as he described the Maneuver Leader Development Strategy, one of the commanding general's priorities.

Sgts. 1st Class Raymond Santiago and Timothy Briggs of the Ranger Training Brigade took top honors in the 30th Annual David E. Grange Jr. Best Ranger Competition, and were each presented with a Colt pistol and induction into the Order of St. Maurice during the official awards ceremony Monday at Marshall Auditorium. Retired Gen. Colin Powell, a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of State, was the guest speaker at Monday's ceremony, and he took the time to commend the 24 finishing teams for their show of endurance.

The 30th annual David E. Grange Jr. Best Ranger Competition saw 49 teams start the competition at Friday's opening ceremonies, but by the end of Sunday's four-mile buddy run, only 24 teams were left standing. The competition is known for the grueling endurance test it provides, and this year was no different.

The U.S. Army Armor School's commandant was promoted to brigadier general during a ceremony Friday at the Fort Benning Conference Center. Brig. Gen. Paul J. Laughlin, the 47th chief of Armor, arrived in August 2012. As commandant, Laughlin is responsible for all facets of Armor training, including proponency for all doctrine, policies and responsibilities that relate to the Armor force.

Nearly 300 basketball-related accidents were reported to the U.S. Army Combat Readiness/Safety Center between fiscal 2008 and 2012, and the cost associated with those accidents was more than $1.5 million! And it's no secret that many more basketball injuries go unreported. I realized anyone is susceptible to these injuries when I became a victim of the hoop demon during my second tour in Iraq.

From 600 to 900 Soldiers take a motorcycle riding course every year through the Maneuver Center of Excellence Safety Office. The goal is to encourage safe driving and, ultimately, fewer motorcycle-related injuries and deaths. "Approximately 75 percent of the Army's fatalities are associated with riding a motorcycle or driving a car," said Brian Blanton, safety and occupational health specialist for the Safety Office. "The Army Traffic Safety Training Program is required for all Soldiers who operate a motorcycle on or off post, on or off duty, anywhere in the world. It's another tool for Soldiers to better and hone their riding skill."

A group of 13 Armor officers and eight OCS candidates are currently undergoing Chinese language training as part of a pilot program at Fort Benning. The program is sponsored by the University of North Georgia's Language Training Center, and consists of five days per week. "It's an intensive program, so it's a heavy load, but I think most of them are excited about that, and you can really tell they're interested in Chinese," Jiaqi Cai, one of the class's instructors, said. "We are happy to see that."

If you think refurbishing an old car is hard, try doing it with an 80-ton tank. But that's exactly what goes on each day at the National Armor and Cavalry Museum on Sand Hill. Located off of Fifth Street, the museum is the world's second-largest collection of Armor-related artifacts. It currently includes about 400 vehicles such as tanks, tank destroyers, amphibious and airborne tanks and Cavalry items such as a Harley-Davidson motorcycle used in World War II. The primary goal of the collection is to preserve historic artifacts for the future so Soldiers can learn from them, said Len Dyer, the museum's director.

It's nothing unusual in the Army. An ROTC cadet elects to join the Infantry; he comes to Fort Benning for the basic officer course, PCSes to a new unit as a platoon leader, then deploys. Along the way, he learns not just about Army doctrine but also about the Army way of life. He might marry, have kids. He might deploy a second or third time. It's the story of hundreds of Infantry officers over the past decade. It's more unusual, however, when it's twins, in this case, Capts. Mark and Eric Evans -- who, incidentally, married sisters as well. But that comes later.

On my most recent deployment, I was assigned to Task Force ODIN to operate and eventually provide instruction on the MQ-1B Warrior Alpha unmanned aircraft system. Shortly after reporting to Fort Hood, Texas, each UAS operator was assigned to a small 10- to 12-Soldier element as they attended their airframe qualification course. They were then deployed to their theater of operation. All of these events would occur within a six- to eight-month period, so, for the majority of the personnel assigned, this was quite a unique experience.

A Fort Benning GS-9 federal employee could expect to see $600-$800 less in monthly take-home pay if Congress does not avert sequestration in the coming days. Civilian employees could be furloughed for 22 discontinuous days -- roughly a day per week -- beginning in April and face a 20 percent loss in income under sequestration. These automatic across-the-board spending cuts will be triggered Friday unless Congress agrees to an alternative.

More than 140 future rifle platoon leaders got a taste of realistic combat Jan. 22 as they participated in a staged company attack at Selby Combined Arms Collective Training Facility. In previous Infantry Basic Officer Leadership Course classes, the presence of Air Force joint terminal attack controllers has been simulated. For this class, however, JTACs were included as part of the preparation for and execution of the attack. In addition to JTACs, the attack also included tanks, as well as scouts and humvees. "They're going to have artillery, they're going to have close air support, they'll have the UAV, they'll have the tanks, they'll have the scouts," said Capt. Christopher Mercado, IBOLC instructor. "They're going to have all these assets, and what we're trying to do is train them on how to control all of these assets at one time. It's extremely tough."

"When you look at the 21st century skills," said Lorri Blanchard, the educational technologist for the Georgia and Alabama school district, "employers want critical thinking skills, people who can think outside of the box, who don't need to be spoon fed everything. So a lot of 21st century teaching is problem-solving -- looking at a situation and coming up with ideas that are out of the box. And so we use technology to help us do that."

The way training is conducted on Fort Benning is continuously changing -- changes that are a result of feedback directly from the field, said Maj. Gen. H. R. McMaster, commanding general of the Maneuver Center of Excellence. "There's a saying that war is the great auditor of all military organizations," McMaster said. Years of planning went into a structural change this fall that brought the Army's Directorates of Logistics under the Army Materiel Command. The change, which went into effect Oct. 1, affects 73 directorates: 49 in the U.S. and 24 abroad. "Our mission is to provide installation-level logistics services to all organizations on Fort Benning as well as about 112 counties of area support across western Georgia, eastern Alabama and the panhandle of Florida," said Dave Shepherd, Fort Benning director of logistics.

After living in a hotel for more than two weeks, 77-year-old Dora Henderson, the widow of Navy veteran Clifford Henderson who died in 1989, returned to her home Saturday in Phenix City, Ala.
