Soldiers from H Co., 1st Battalion, 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) deployed out of Andrews Air Force Base, Md. bound for the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk, La. The "Hard Rock Hotel" will be training there from March 31 to April 19.

Year of the NCO Review highlights contributions of the Army's NCOs

Soldiers of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) marched in a ceremony this month to honor the Year of the NCO. The ceremony, a review hosted by Sgt. Maj. of the Army Kenneth O. Preston, was designed to showcase the contributions of noncommissioned officers in the U.S. Army.

Army Emergency Relief is a private nonprofit organization incorporated by the Secretary of War and the Army Chief of Staff in 1942. AER's sole mission is to help Soldiers and their dependents.

The Old Guard sent 273 Soldiers to Fort A.P. Hill, Va., to try to earn their expert infantryman's badge. Of those 273, 134 proved themselves worthy of the badge. The badge is important because it shows that the wearer is an expert at the infantryman's trade.

In the confusing realm of gender stereotypes, innuendo and sex roles in human relationships, often young Soldiers are left in a fog not knowing what is acceptable behavior and what's a crime. "This is part of a cultural change in our Army," said Lt. Col. Robert White, commander, U.S. Army Garrison Heidelberg, Monday in an introduction to "Sex Signals," a scripted, interactive and improve show designed to make young people think about sexual assault prevention.

Old Guard Marches to Honor the Backbone of the Army

Sgt. Maj. of the Army Kenneth Preston hosted an Army Full Honor Review in honor of the Year of the NCO at a ceremony in Conmy Hall at Fort Myer, Va. The ceremony consisted of five platoons from the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), and the U.S. Army Band (Pershing's Own). The ceremony was held to highlight the contributions of NCOs in the Army. Soldiers in the review were dressed to show the variety of missions Soldiers are capable of. At the ceremony, Preston read the Charge of the Noncommissioned Officer to 29 newly inducted NCOs.

A made-for-television movie based on the real-life observations of a casualty escort was screened for more than 150 Soldiers, civilian and DoD support staff from Human Resource Command, Casualty and Mortuary Affairs, at Fort Belvoir's Wood Theater Feb. 19. The HBO film 'Taking Chance' chronicles the reflections and feelings of retired Marine Lt. Col. Mike Strobl as he escorts a fellow Marine to his hometown in Dubois, Wyo., from Dover Air Force Base, Del. Strobl documents the warmth, kindness and respect that he and the Marine's remains are shown on the journey to his final resting place. Strobl is portrayed by actor Kevin Bacon.

Hawaii Soldiers support Pro Bowl

Soldiers from the 8th Theater Sustainment Command were given a distinct honor this year to serve on the Joint Service Color Guard for the National Football League 2009 Pro Bowl at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu. Three Soldiers comprised a part of the Joint Service Color Guard, which were responsible for rendering honors for the start of the Pro Bowl.

56th Presidential Inaugural Parade

Since 1956, the Soldiers of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) have been a part of presidential inaugural parades. On Jan. 20, 2009, the United States welcomed its 44th president, Pres. Barack H. Obama. For Obama's inaugural parade, over 700 Old Guard Soldiers participated in the parade, in elements such as the Commander in Chiefs Guard, the Fife and Drum Corps, the Armed Forces Color Guard, the Army Honor Guard Company, and the joint and Army cordon.

The Old Guard celebrated the activation of 4th Battalion in Conmy Hall, Fort Myer on Dec. 18. On June 3, 1784, the battalion began as a company of the First American Regiment. After several reactivations and redesignations throughout the centuries, 4th battalion was redesignated to the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment on Oct. 1, 2005.

The Old Guard has marched as the official Aca,!A"Escort to the President" since the 1953 inaugural parade of President Eisenhower after President Truman designated them the title in 1952.

An Old Guard Soldier walked away with a silver medal at the 2008 U.S. Army Culinary Arts Competition in Fort Lee, Va., on Friday. Spc. Jeffrey Vaughan, a cook with the 529th Regimental Support Company, 4th Battalion, 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) submitted Draco, a 2 A,A1/2 foot long Chinese Dragon made of white chocolate into the centerpiece category of the competition.

Before the days of the radio and telephone, American Soldiers relied on musicians to relay movement commands. Music also signaled when to wake up, when to eat, and when to go to bed.
