Army Jazzers travel miles, sharing music a la Miles, at Mile-High City

The Jazz Ambassadors of The United States Army Field Band head to Denver for jazz performance with famed Marvin Hamlisch and Colorado Symphony Orchestra Sept. 25 and 26. Master Sgt. Michael Johnston, trumpeter, looks forward to returning to his hometown to perform, educate local residents.

Although the Watervliet Arsenal workforce may believe there is no such thing as a free lunch, some have found that by going "green" there is such a thing as a free ride. No, the Arsenal workforce is not participating in a television realty show that would have them pimp their rides. But what a few energy conscious wonderers have found is that the federal and New York state governments will pay for their transportation to and from work.

Sgt. 1st Class Brad C. Turner Jr. appeared on the FOX morning show to talk about another show, "The Grill Sergeants." An original Pentagon Channel program, this weekly, half-hour series features top military chefs offering nutrition and safety tips, as well as walking viewers through step-by-step food preparation. "Discovered" online by FOX staff, the "The Grill Sergeants" generated enough interest with producers to invite Turner on their morning show.

Arsenal projects stimulate NY businesses

Several New York-area businesses share more than $3 million in maintenance and repair projects at the historic Watervliet Arsenal. Federal stimulus money in the amount of $1.65 million will soon be put to work at the Arsenal. Not part of the Federal plan, the Arsenal has nearly another $1.8 million allocated to NY businesses for ongoing mainenance and repair projects.

New York mayor honors Fighting 69th

The annual Memorial Day activities at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in New York City featured a salute the the "Fighting 69th." Soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry Regiment, New York National Guard were on hand as their regiment was honored for its service dating to the Civil War. The battalion color guard was present and the battalion commander gave the key note address.

New York hosts Twilight Tattoo

U.S. Army Garrison Fort Hamilton and the Military District of Washington presented a Twilight Tattoo June 20. Originally scheduled for Dyker Park in Brooklyn the tattoo featuring the 3rd U.S. Infantry "The Old Guard" and The United States Army Band, "Pershing's Own" was moved indoors at the Fort Hamilton Theater because of weather.

Watervliet Arsenal: Forging steel and families of strength

When the last machine is turned off each day there is an eerie sense that all is not done at the historic Watervliet Arsenal. Among the buildings that some date back to the 1800s, are machines that have felt the touch of hundreds, if not thousands, of machinists. Many of those machinists are no longer alive today in a natural sense. But from machinists' palm grease, sweat, and blood that they have shed through the years some say their spirit remains each day, each night, and maybe, forever.

It was the boat with the least positive name of ODR Wreck that prevailed and sank the competition of Shark Attack and USS Never Sail during the first Cardboard Vessel Regatta, Saturday at Benyaurd Indoor Pool. Fletcher, Arsenal commander. Aca,!A"Although most people may associate the Arsenal as a cannon factory, our growth came mostly from non-cannon manufacturing,Aca,!A? said Fletcher.
