About 1862 participants ran, walked, rucked, or hand-cranked their way through 10 miles of Fort Bragg, during the 15th Annual Army Birthday 10-Miler. The day was hot and humid and the course consisted of many hills and everyone agreed that the best part of the race was the finish line. However, most said they will definitely run the race next year.

May 24, members of the Fort McPherson and Fort Gillem community got to discuss the themes found in the book in an Army Community Service (ACS) sponsored program. FORT POLK, La. - Several teens from Child, Youth and School Service Hired! program put in a hard day's work May 7 at the Warrior Community Center. They hauled dozens of chairs - enough for the more than 180 guests - and grouped dining tables with an eye towards perfection. Some teens sorted tablecloths by size, a harder task than it seems, and made sure there was not a wrinkle in sight as they laid them carefully on the tables. The teens worked six hours that day, the day before Mother's Day, in preparation for the Mother's Day Brunch, sponsored by the Directorate of Family Morale, Welfare and Recreation.

Redstone Restored To Full Power

REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala.--Reopening Redstone Arsenal has been a team effort. With the majority of electrical power shut down for a week due to the destruction caused by a series of storms and tornadoes that passed through the area on April 27, the Arsenal was only open to basic services and closed to the work force for just over a week. During that time, the Garrison's Directorate of Public Works, Directorate of Logistics, Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security and Directorate of Emergency Services along with the Aviation and Missile Command/Garrison Public Affairs Office worked countless hours based at the Installation Operation Center/Emergency Operation Center to bring the Arsenal back up to full operating power, provide safety and security during the power outage, and inform employees about their work status.

Creating crafts builds life skills

Connie Schley, Child, Youth and School Services pre-kindergarten assistant teacher, helps children in her class do arts and crafts April 29. The crafts, which included planting seeds and making a necklace, a door hanger and a picture frame, gave the children a break from normal academics and also served to help the children develop their fine motor skills, creativity and ability to follow directions and sequences.

The Fort McPherson Month of the Military Child children's parade April 28 took place at 10 a.m. and circled the Garrison Headquarters (Bldg. 65) on Fort McPherson, was the final activity in the MOMC celebrations here. The MOMC has been celebrated by the military since 1986 and was created to honor military children and acknowledge the hardships of growing up in a military environment.

Like many Soldiers, 1st Lt. Jon Morgan said he struggled adapting to the slower pace home life offered after a deployment. Morale Welfare and Recreation created the Warrior Adventure Quest program, which introduces recently redeployed Soldiers to high-adrenaline activities like whitewater rafting, paintball and challenge and high ropes courses, to help them transition back to garrison and family life.

The Army's budget is smaller than it has been in previous years, and it will get smaller still. However, a different fiscal reality does not change the reality of what we owe to Soldiers and Families for their service and sacrifice. The Army's commitment to Soldiers and Families remains as strong as ever.

In the auditorium, parents - in uniform and out - sat next to their student or mingled with fellow military family members. In keeping with the Army Family Covenant, a new Army program called the Survivor Outreach Services began a joint effort in 2008 with the collaboration of the Installation Management Command; Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation; Casualty and Mortuary Affairs Operation; the Army National Guard and the Army Reserve. The program provides support and services to active, reserve and Army National Guard surviving Families of fallen Soldiers. Retired Maj. Sandy McClain from Fort Benning, Ga., is the new SOS coordinator for West Point.

Warrior Adventure Quest Reduces High-risk Behavior

Two years ago, Family and Morale, Welfare & Recreation Command began offering Army battalions a pilot program called Warrior Adventure Quest. WAQ includes high-adventure recreation activities to help Soldiers transition from combat operations to a "new normal," reducing the potential for high-risk behaviors that are counterproductive or otherwise harmful.
