And I think it's important because we are just coming out of a fairly significant and stressful period, and we're beginning to move in a much better direction for this Army.

Family members of Staff Sgt. Robert J. Miller were distinguished visitors at the White House for a Medal of Honor ceremony for Miller on Oct. 6, 2010. Miller was posthumously awarded the honor for his heroic actions in Afghanistan, displaying immeasurable courage and uncommon valor eventually sacrificing his own life to save the lives of his teammates and 15 Afghanistan National Army soldiers.

The Miller family and friends of the family joined the Army's senior leadership for dinner at the quarters of the Chief of Staff of the Army, Gen. George W. Casey Jr., in Ft. Myer, VA, on Oct. 5, 2010. The Miller family was in the Washington D.C. area because their family member, Staff Sgt. Robert J. Miller, was posthumously presented the Medal of Honor by the President of the United States for his service in Afghanistan during the winter of 2008.

And we lived to train. We certainly were not the combat seasoned force we are now. And I have to tell folks, "We're never going back there." The New Normal, such as it is, is going to be fundamentally different than what we all knew before September 11th. As I've said, it's changed us."

The U.S. Army celebrated a distinguished officer's 34 years of service to the nation during the retirement ceremony for Gen. Stanley J. McChrystal on Fort Lesley J. McNair, Friday. "Gen. McChrystal has made lasting contributions to our Army and our country," said Gen. George W. Casey Jr., Army Chief of Staff. McChrystal was lauded as a true warrior, scholar and statesman and an expert at irregular warfare, hybrid warfare, counter-insurgency and counterterrorism. Mrs. Annie McChrystal, his wife, was singled out for her dedication and volunteer work with Soldiers, families and especially wounded warriors.

Gen. George W. Casey Jr., U.S. Army Chief of Staff, addressed military officers at the Naval Postgraduate School as part of the Secretary of the Navy's Guest Lecture series, May 13. The NPS is an academic institution whose emphasis is on study and research programs relevant to the Navy's interests, as well as to the interests of other arms of the DoD. While in California Casey also visited the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center. DFLIC is regarded as one of the finest schools for foreign language instruction in the nation. The Institute provides resident instruction in 24 languages and several dialects, five days a week, seven hours per day, with two to three hours of homework each night.

Warrior Games showcase abilities, highlight spirit of competition

More than 200 wounded warriors came together over the past week in athletic competition to showcase their abilities and potential at the inaugural Warrior Games in Colorado Springs, Colo. The U.S. Olympic Committee hosted the games and events, which included shooting, swimming, archery, track, discus, shot put, cycling, sitting volleyball and wheelchair basketball.

Ride 2 Recovery encourages the mental and physical rehabilitation of active-duty servicemembers and veterans while promoting awareness of their sacrifices.
