On Thursday, the Chief of Staff of the Army, General George W. Casey, Jr., attended the Senior Leader Panel of the three-day "Profession of Arms" seminar held in McLean, Virginia. The Chief encouraged an open dialogue - at all levels and over the coming months - about how ten years of war has impacted the Army as a Profession. Furthermore, he challenged the audience of Officers, NCOs, Civilians and international partners to examine the impact of a decade of war on both the expertise and on culture of the individual Soldier, the unit and the Army as an institution. Today's findings, along with upcoming surveys, are intended to help shape and drive future discussions as we continually examine what it means to be a Professional.

The U.S. Military Rest and Recuperation (R&R) program today observed the one-millionth soldier transported home from Iraq and Afghanistan. Staff Sgt. Salvatore "Sal" Giunta received the Medal of Honor from President Barack Obama during a White House ceremony Nov. 16. The U.S. Congress awards the medal, the nation's highest military honor, for risk of life in combat beyond the call of duty. Giunta, who is the first non-postumous award recipient since Vietnam, was honored for actions during a firefight in the Korengal valley of Afghanistan in October 2007.
