As of June 14, 2012, we have experienced 13 Class A manned aircraft accidents with nine fatalities. In comparison to 2011's entire year of 15 Class A manned aircraft accidents and 11 fatalities, it becomes clear this year's trend is one we need to reverse. Current accident trends include breakdowns in standards, discipline and maintenance, with human error cited as a contributing factor in every manned aircraft Class A.

  • Army Secretary participates in Exercise

    Secretary of the Army John McHugh participated in the Strategic Decision Making Exercise at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pa., Mar. 2, 2012. The exercise is an annual culminating educational event that allows Army War College students to apply knowledge, skills and critical thinking to analyze multiple complex regional problems tied to U.S. interests and to develop proposed courses of action that integrate all of the elements of national power -- diplomatic, informational, military and economic. The students briefed McHugh who was playing the role of a presidential adviser.

Westphal asked questions regarding entrance eligibility, facility capabilities, academics and graduation. Earlier in the day he toured West Point, met with key leaders and visited the academy's centers of excellence to assess future Army and academy requirements.
