  • Army receives first six NEVs

    Jan 12, 2009

    The first six "neighborhood electric vehicles" were delivered to the Army Jan. 12 during a ceremony at Fort Myer, Va. The ceremonial delivery of the NEVs, which are entirely electric powered, represents the beginning of a leasing action by the Army to obtain more than 4,000 of the vehicles. The use of NEVs by the Army is part of its comprehensive and far-reaching energy security initiative to ease its dependence on fossil fuels. As part of that initiative, the service will be leveraging electric vehicles and other technologies that exist today, as well as exploring emerging technologies.

    On May 5, 1866, veterans and residents of Waterloo, New York, placed flowers on the graves at each of the town's cemeteries to honor the local Soldiers and Sailors who had fallen during the Civil War. Proposed by a local pharmacist, Henry C. Welles, this act of remembrance centered on his belief that while praising the living veterans of the Civil War, it was equally important to remember the patriotic dead. This tradition has grown for a century and a half - it is Memorial Day.

    Today, we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Army Reserve. Authorized by Congress on April 23, 1908, the Army Reserve is a critical component of the total Army. Initially comprised of just 160 medical officers, it has grown to 195,000 strong. At its inception, the Army Reserve - our Warrior Citizens - brought civilian expertise into military service. After demonstrating their importance in World War I, the Army Reserve evolved into an essential component of the Nation's landpower - a role it still serves today.
