The future of the Army’s tactical network is taking shape this month as more than 3,800 Soldiers from the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, evaluate key technologies that connect units to one another and higher headquarters. As the Army’s largest network field exercise to date, the six-week Network Integration Evaluation will assess these capabilities separately and in tandem as a “system of systems” by gathering Soldier feedback from realistic operational scenarios.

Solar Lights Across Picatinny

PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. - The Directorate of Public Works recently installed solar streetlight fixtures on an environmentally sensitive walkway between the north and south water basin. The pathway runs between the Picatinny Chapel and Child Development Center, allowing passage for residents without having to walk along the main roads. Because of concerns with standard streetlight installations, the use of solar power not only solved our environmental concerns, but brings us one step closer to increasing our energy efficiency with renewable energy.

Former Army Sgt. Bryan Anderson delivered a powerful message to hundreds of workers at the Watervliet Arsenal as he talked about his two tours in Iraq and the date of his 'accident.' On Oct. 23, 2005, while driving his HMMWV through the streets of Iraq, an Improvised Explosive Device exploded. Anderson's injuries included the loss of both legs and his left hand. Although some people may view Bryan as being disabled, after hearing him speak and seeing him move about today, we can all agree that he is 'enabled.' Although the Watervliet Arsenal workforce has been supporting our Nation's warfighters for nearly 200 years, a visit by someone of the character as Sgt. Anderson truly redefines the purpose, as well as the urgency of the Arsenal's mission.

International Micro Air Vehicle competition fills North Alabama sky

The annual IMAV conference and flight competition serves as a platform to exchange information on state-of-the-art micro air vehicles. The event is focused on development of autonomous controls for very small unmanned aircraft. Control of the air vehicle may be remote, operator control through on board video, or autonomous. The aircraft must weight less than 5 kilograms and measure no greater than 1 meter in any direction.

REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala.--Reopening Redstone Arsenal has been a team effort. With the majority of electrical power shut down for a week due to the destruction caused by a series of storms and tornadoes that passed through the area on April 27, the Arsenal was only open to basic services and closed to the work force for just over a week. During that time, the Garrison's Directorate of Public Works, Directorate of Logistics, Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security and Directorate of Emergency Services along with the Aviation and Missile Command/Garrison Public Affairs Office worked countless hours based at the Installation Operation Center/Emergency Operation Center to bring the Arsenal back up to full operating power, provide safety and security during the power outage, and inform employees about their work status.

Jeffery Williams was on his first deployment to Iraq in 2004 when the Humvee he was riding in was involved in an IED ambush, killing two of his fellow Soldiers and paralyzing him from the chest down. Seven years after the attack that destined him to live the rest of his life in a wheelchair, Williams is about to reclaim his independence.

The general was reflecting on his time in command of the center. He will relinquish command to Brig. Gen. John McGuiness on May 10 after serving as the NSSC Commanding General and Deputy Commanding General of the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Center.

West Point's Projects Day showcases ingenuity, innovation

Sometimes simplicity lends itself to ingenious solutions. That was the case when Class of 2012 Cadet Gerrit Van Ommering designed a better defensive barrier. Working with Class of 2012 Cadets Justin Weeks, Josh Peterson and John Paulson, the team used a current model HESCO sand-filled barrier and modified it to reduce the need for heavy equipment and extensive construction time. The design was showcased April 28 at Projects Day, which featured more than 300 capstone projects, senior theses and research activities from West Point cadets and invited colleges and academies.

Program Director Counter-Rockets, Artillery and Mortar transitions to new home

In order to facilitate the migration of the Air and Missile Defense community to a single, common Command and Control (C2) user interface, the Army Acquisition Executive directed Program Director Counter-Rockets, Artillery and Mortar (PD C-RAM) to transition from Program Executive Office Command, Control, Communications-Tactical (PEO C3T) to PEO Missiles and Space. The transfer was officially complete on April 10; however, some actions will hold over through the rest of the fiscal year. Although PD C-RAM has been reassigned to another office, the capabilities fostered under the leadership of PEO C3T will continue to protect and support the Warfighter well into the future.
