The Department of Defense announced today major units scheduled to deploy as part of upcoming rotations of forces operating in Afghanistan. The announcement involves one active duty brigade combat team and one Stryker cavalry regiment, totaling approximately 7,700 personnel, and one National Guard brigade with approximately 3,500 personnel. The scheduled rotation for these forces will begin in the spring of 2010.

MCEC Executive Director Mary Keller and MCEC member Patricia Shinseki talked about Living in the New Normal (LINN), a system for educating adults how to empower military children to cope with issues of separation, parents with multiple deployments and losing a parent in combat.

Strong Bonds is a commander-initiated-but chaplain-led-program designed to help strengthen relationships through skill-training for singles, couples, Families and deployment cycle support. All sub-programs aligned under this curriculum are focused on sustaining life-long relations and building up the future force, according to Strohm.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - A senior official from the Assistant Chief of Staff for Installation Management's office spoke to Association of the U.S. Army Family Forum attendees Oct 5 at the Washington Convention Center here, pertaining to the results of Army Family Readiness Group town hall meetings held at six Army installations this summer. Kathleen Marin from the ACSIM office told those gathered for the annual Family Forums, which included 450 company-level FRG leaders from U.S. Army Forces Command units nationwide, about the concerns raised by Army Families at town hall meetings she attended at Fort Campbell, Ky.; Fort Drum, N.Y.; Fort Lewis, Wash.; Fort Bragg, N.C.; Fort Stewart, Ga.; and Fort Hood, Texas. Marin said the Army is at a historic moment in its history; it has been fighting a war for eight years with an all volunteer force and the Families who love and support those Soldiers. Subsequently, she said this causes Army officials to look at how they can calibrate Army programs and services to meet the needs of those repeatedly deploying Soldiers and their Families. With that in mind, the Chief of Staff of the Army challenged us at the two-year review mark to evaluate how well the Army is doing promoting and make available Army sponsored services, Marin said.

U.S. Army Forces Command Family Readiness Group (FRG) leaders heard Dr. Lynn Heirakuji, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Personnel Oversight, share results of an Army-wide study about geographically dispersed Soldiers and Family members Oct. 5, during the Association of the U.S. Army Family Forum in Washington, D.C. The 450 company-level FRG leaders from installations across the country are in the nation's capital to attend the second annual FORSCOM FRG Training Symposium at the Hyatt Crystal City Hotel. This annual training event was scheduled the same week as the annual AUSA National Meeting and Expo to allow FORSCOM's FRG leaders to take advantage of AUSA's Family Forums and to see the exhibits at AUSA in addition to the full agenda prepared for them by FORSCOM's G1 Well Being Division. Heirakuji said the Army's Geographically Dispersed Task Force (GDTF) conducted two strategic working groups, during February and August, with about 6,000 of its key stakeholders, Soldiers and Family members. The purpose of the study was to gage the perceptions of those Soldiers and Family members, learning about their awareness, their accessibility and their use of 32 Army-sponsored services designed to improve the Well Being of Army Families. The study consisted of input from Reserve Component Soldiers and Family members who have dispersed in communities across America. The task force set out to answer the question, "How can the Army provide comprehensive and equitable support services to meet the diverse needs of Soldiers and Family Members, regardless of their location or component'" Heirakuji said.

A Phase III clinical trial involving more than 16,000 adult volunteers in Thailand has demonstrated that an investigational HIV vaccine regimen was safe and modestly effective in preventing HIV infection. According to final results released by the trial sponsor, the U.S. Army Surgeon General, the prime boost combination of ALVACR HIV and AIDSVAXR B/E lowered the rate of HIV infection by 31.2% compared with placebo.

There's a lot of flying history on McKinley Range. Amid the helicopters and an A-10 Thunderbolt airplane set up on the range for force training is an OV-1 Mohawk, a photo observation and electronic reconnaissance airplane used by the Army in Europe, Korea, the Vietnam War, Central and South America, Alaska, and Operation Desert Storm. It is a military aircraft that is at the center of the 20th reunion of the OV-Mohawk Association Sept. 23-27 in Nashville. Yet, the actual physical presence of a Mohawk on Redstone Arsenal was an interesting discovery for a former Mohawk pilot and technical observer who recently visited McKinley Range to see the military aircraft for themselves. "Ten years ago, a friend (now deceased Mohawk pilot Mike Langer) told me a Mohawk had come to Redstone Arsenal at some time," said David Brown, a retired master sergeant and Mohawk technical observer. "The Veterans Memorial Museum showed me pictures of the airplane out at Redstone Arsenal. So, I knew it was on the Arsenal. I just didn't know where it was."

Chief Warrant Officer 3 Mark Burrows is a survivor thanks to the technology the Army put at his fingertips while serving as a Kiowa Warrior standardization pilot in Iraq. And most of the technology Burrows relied on while evading terrorists who were aiming to kill him and his co-pilot, Chief Warrant Officer Steven Cianfrini, was developed and fielded by the Program Executive Office-Soldier. "My job (for the 17th Cavalry Regiment's Troop 2, 3rd Squadron) was to ensure aircrews were trained and had the proper equipment so they could bring themselves back home safely from a mission," Burrows said during a presentation at the Aviation Life Support Equipment Users Conference at the Von Braun Center on Aug. 25. Little did he know as the senior pilot for Task Force Viper that he would use that training and equipment to save himself and Cianfrini.

Army Management Staff College graduated a combined total of 107 students from its Intermediate course (IC) and Continuing Education for Senior Leaders (CESL) program recently. Of the total, 29 students graduated from the senior leader program and 78 graduated from the Intermediate Course at ceremonies held in their honor. Although the classes are different, all students had at least one thing in common--they took time away from their home stations to invest in their development as leaders. The graduates raved about the courses.

The U.S. Army Chemical Materials Agency (CMA), Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., has the mission of safely storing the U.S. stockpile of chemical munitions in Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Kentucky, Oregon, and Utah. CMA is also managing the safe demilitarization of the stockpile in Alabama, Arkansas, Oregon, and Utah. Since operations began in 1990, 65 percent of the stockpile (20,425 tons), in more than 2,198,500 individual munitions and containers, has been eliminated. Chemical Corps (Dragon) Soldiers at Fort Campbell, Ky., wanted to see some of the stockpile and learn how it was being demilitarized. They traveled to Anniston (Ala.) Army Depot and did just that.

John Sheldon, who is from Pittsburgh, Pa., had not intended to join the Army; he certainly did not intend to become a public affairs specialist, and he did not intend to follow in his grandfathers footsteps. But that's exactly what he has done-in his own way. ....Sheldon's grandfather was Walter, or Walt, Sheldon. ....."He is best known for his nonfiction work-it started with detective novels to pay the bills," John said. "(His writings were) first hand, non-fiction accounts and interviews of the occupation of Japan, and history of Vietnam, the history of the Korea war, and other biographical and U.S. military history books. (His best known work) is the 'The Honorable Conquerors' and it is also the most referenced book about the occupation of Japan." Other non-fiction work includes "Tigers in the Rice" 1969, "Hell or High Water" 1968, and "Tour of Duty" 1959.

For many people, reaching a mountaintop often brings to mind the beauty of a sunset, the promise of a majestic view and the hope for a better future. But, for Nate Self, a mountaintop symbolizes two starkly different things - the terror of sudden death at the hands of an enemy, and God's promise to be with His followers through the toughest battles. A West Point graduate and a former Army Ranger captain, Self was at the top of Takur Ghar Mountain in Afghanistan in 2002 when enemy fire killed seven of his fellow Soldiers in a battle that is now known as the Rescue on Roberts Ridge. But he left that mountain knowing that God was with him and his men during the heat of battle. "Whenever I see a mountain I am reminded of Bull Hill at West Point and reciting Psalm 121 as we climbed it," he said. "The first verse always stuck with me. Whenever I saw mountains that was God reminding me He was there."
