    Fort Stewart Central Dispatch is celebrating National Public Safety Telecommunications Week, April 10-16. This week is sponsored by the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials and is recognized by the United States Congress. This recognition honors the hundreds of thousands of men and women who answer emergency calls, dispatch emergency response personnel and equipment, and render life-saving assistance to the world's citizens.

Blocking out the sunlight, filling the doorway, is an imposing outline of a man six foot, four inches and 280 pounds, kitted out in body armor and grasping an M-4 rifle -the embodiment of a Marne NCO.

    It's before dawn and most of the Soldiers on Hunter Army Airfield are either still asleep or just getting out of bed. But, behind a mahogany desk sits a man enclosed by four walls that bear a visual recording of his journey in the Army. His office is adorned with coins, plaques, photographs and other memorabilia dating back to deployments to Grenada, Panama and Iraq, to name a few. These plaques describe a life committed to the service of his country and to the Soldiers he loves. He arrives everyday at 5 a.m. so he can get a jump on the day prior to his 6:30 a.m. physical training.

    Actress Sissy Spacek starred in the movie "Coal Miner's Daughter," but Vonzetta Davis-Lewis , brings new life and meaning to this real life story of a woman who overcame a meager beginning to become successful. Davis-Lewis says that it was her father, a former West Virginia coal miner, who had the greatest impact on her life because he was humble, patient, peaceful and a hard worker. Adopted, along with her sister as a toddler, she affectionately refers to her dad as the "nicest person you would ever want to meet." He made sure that his girls always felt special and stressed that not everyone would like them because of their brown skin, but they, in turn, had to treat everyone fairly and with respect.

This building, 8805, is the home of School Age Services, ages 6-12, and Middle School/Teen program at Hunter Army Airfield. The brand-new facility, which opened in February 2010, is a mecca for children on Hunter.

    In 2009, Lt. Col. Nora Marcos, commander of Division Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division, led approximately 1,200 Soldiers, who serve as the division's staff and battalion support element, to Contingency Operating Base Speicher, in northern Iraq, to complete a deployment, which lasted more than a year for many of the Soldiers under her command. The morning of Jan. 20, Lt. Col. Marcos relinquished command of her unit in a ceremony at Cottrell Field, thanking the Soldiers who sacrificed so much during the unit's deployment.
