    Certain trends and traits are specific with each passing generation -- from the bell bottoms and go-go boots of the 70s to the leg-warmers, scrunchies and hair spray of the 80s to the ripped jeans, slouch socks and combat boots of the 90s. While all those trends ebb and flow, one thing remains the same -- the ways in which the young people of any generation communicate with each other usually leaves older generations scratching their heads. This communication gap can lead to some pretty humorous misunderstandings, but in an organization like the Army, where not only communication but understanding is paramount to mission success and unit cohesion, those misunderstandings can be much more devastating.

A radioactive release occurred on Mar. 10 at 12:00 p.m. in the vicinity of Fullerton, Louisiana.

  • Greywolf spearheads effort to unload excess

    FORT HOOD, Texas - It happens all over the world from time to time. Closets, drawers, garages and attics get purged of unnecessary, unused and broken items; and the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, has been long overdue for a bit of housekeeping. "3rd Brigade is doing a brigade-wide excess turn-in of equipment," said Maj. Michael Spears, the 3rd ABCT logistics officer. The push to purge the unit of excess equipment was jump-started when Soldiers from the 6th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd ABCT, laid out of all the unit's equipment, to include the excess, in the motor pool. At the time, Gen. Robert Abrams, U.S. Forces Command commanding general, was visiting and saw firsthand the excess equipment problem.

In a time marked by considerable change and opportunity for women, the Department of Defense, having recently opened all military occupational specialties to women, provided much to be celebrated during this year's Women's History Month Observance here March 24.

    More than 4,100 Soldiers from Fort Hood, Texas, are arriving in South Korea to ensure peace on the Korean peninsula and deter North Korean aggression. Soldiers from the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team "Ironhorse," 1st Cavalry Division, began arriving here Feb. 1 to begin their nine-month rotation. Ironhorse Soldiers replace the Soldiers of the 2nd ABCT "Black Jack," 1st Cav. Div., who completed the first rotation of a U.S. armored brigade in the Korean peninsula from June 2015 to February 2016.

    After returning from a nine-month rotational deployment to the Republic of Korea, the Soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment "Chargers," 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division have had quite a busy year. Along with the expected incoming and outgoing personnel turnover, the last 12 months for them has been full of situational training exercises, gunneries and a stint at the Exportable Combat Training Capability exercise in Camp Shelby, Mississippi where the unit partnered with the 155th Armored Brigade Combat Team of the Mississippi National Guard. Now, the Charger Soldiers are at it again as they serve as a subordinate unit of the brigade's sister unit, the 3rd Cavalry Regiment, during a rotation at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California.

    A team of experts from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, led by Col. Peter Weina, chief of research for WRNMMC, traveled to Fort Hood, Texas, Sept. 25 to teach medics and health care professionals from across the 1st Cavalry Division about diseases from tropical regions of the world. Dubbed the Tropical Medicine Course, students learned about diseases which are common to tropical areas, and their treatments. "It's kind of like weapons familiarization of tropical medicine; we are not going to make snipers out of them, but at least they know which way to point the gun," said Weina.
