WWII veteran receives Bronze Star after 65 years

On Dec. 30, 1943, Pfc. Clarence Wallaert was shot in the hip by a German sniper while fighting against the German Winter Line in Italy. Wallaert bandaged his own wound and provided 12 hours of automatic rifle support for his Army comrades advancing into the Liri Valley-the "gateway to Rome."

A Joint solid state laser (SSL) Science & Technology effort executed by the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command has achieved weapon level (100kW+) performance in the laboratory. This accomplishment marks the first time that a SSL has achieved the level of performance required for weapon applications of interest to the Army. A 100kW laser can rapidly heat a target causing various catastrophic effects, such as exploding a warhead or airframe failure.

'No Thin Skin' - Trainers Help Hawaii-based Soldiers Improve During Exercise

The small group of Soldiers walked around the controlled chaos of the forward command post, observing and writing notes. The Soldiers wore their patrol caps indoors, to be more easily identified. Their purpose - to help a developing theater sustainment command staff raise their game and better serve their commanding general. The observer trainers are part of Operations Group Sierra Fox, a specialized unit of combined arms experts from the Battle Command Training Program out of the Combined Arms Center, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. The group was formed as part of Army Transformation to oversee and train theater sustainment commands, expeditionary sustainment commands, and other support and functional brigades.

The HBO film 'Taking Chance' chronicles the reflections and feelings of retired Marine Lt. Col. Mike Strobl as he escorts a fellow Marine to his hometown in Dubois, Wyo., from Dover Air Force Base, Del. Strobl documents the warmth, kindness and respect that he and the Marine's remains are shown on the journey to his final resting place. Strobl is portrayed by actor Kevin Bacon.

It was the boat with the least positive name of ODR Wreck that prevailed and sank the competition of Shark Attack and USS Never Sail during the first Cardboard Vessel Regatta, Saturday at Benyaurd Indoor Pool. Designed to inspire a little community competition and fun between Fort Belvoir organizations, the regatta was organized by Anthony Poore, FMWR fitness coordinator.

Service personally rewarding for Cayanong

It's not uncommon for someone to have second thoughts about joining a branch of the military. However, that wasn't the case for Monica Cayanong. Cayanong, a first sergeant with the Army's Veterinary Command at Fort Belvoir, has recorded more than 20 years in a career filled with praise and accommodations. She was recently inducted into the elite Sgt. Audie Murphy Club and has aspirations of one day becoming a sergeant major.

From dropout to doctor, thanks to Army mentor

Since opening its doors in August, the Army Preparatory School has helped more than 700 new Soldiers receive their GED before entering Basic Combat Training. It has a success rate of 99.3 percent. Long before the school formally started helping Soldiers achieve their high school equivalency, leaders throughout Army history had helped individual Soldiers reach that same goal. One of those Soldiers was Tom Connelly. Today, he is a surgeon specializing in treating skin cancer. But in 1966, Connelly was a 10th-grade dropout when he entered the Army. After he completed BCT, he was sent to Vietnam where his commanding officer pushed him to finish his education.
