    Nerijus Gvergzdis was born with his legs crossed. He has cerebral palsy. Born in the winter in Soviet-occupied Lithuania, Nerijus' mother, Egidija, was told by state doctors to wrap her son in wet clothes and leave him in a room with the windows open so he would contract pneumonia and die.

    PRISTINA, Kosovo -- Surplus medical equipment that was no longer needed by Multinational Battle Group-East's Task Force Medical was donated by the U.S. Embassy's Civil Military Support Element in Kosovo to healthcare officials at Pristina's leading hospital during a ceremony, Aug. 27. An ultrasound and portable X-ray machines, valued at over $200,000, were turned into property management and taken off the military equipment property books, then were turned over to the University Clinical Center of Kosovo last November, but embassy officials wanted to commemorate the machines' repurposing, which have already benefited hundreds of patients.

    WIESBADEN, Germany -- As announced by the German Federal Ministry of Defence, U.S. Army Europe's next chief of staff will be a general officer from the Bundeswehr, Brig. Gen. Markus Laubenthal. In this capacity, Laubenthal will synchronize the activities of the USAREUR staff in much the same manner as his American predecessors have done. Laubenthal has already been receiving initial briefings from the USAREUR staff and is expected to report to duty full time on or about August 4.

While significant, the flight was only achievable through the higher efforts of 45 aircraft repairers and technicians within the aviation maintenance company for Multinational Battle Group-East's Southern Command Post, who worked tirelessly to ensure the battle group's helicopters are consistently maintained.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reached a milestone in Europe this month, marking its fourth decade on the continent. The organization's history here extends back to the end of World War II. After the war, a number of military construction agencies emerged to meet the challenges facing U.S. forces rebuilding Western Europe and combating the growing threat from the Soviet Union. The U.S. Army Construction Agency was established in Germany in 1956, followed by U.S. Army Engineer Element in 1964 and U.S. Army Engineer Command Europe in 1966.

Pendall once served as chief of staff for reconnaissance operations center 1 in the brigade's 24th MI Battalion when it was stationed in Heidelberg. This time he arrived to the brigade from a position as the U.S. Army intelligence liaison to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Lincoln Laboratory.
