  • U.S. Army South supports Operation Unified Response

    Beginning in March, U.S. Army South deployed to Port-au-Prince, Haiti to provide support to the Joint Task Force-Haiti headquarters in support of Operation Unified Response. As part of the headquarters element of Joint Task Force-Haiti, Army South assists in providing leadership and coordination for military personnel in Haiti and liaison with the lead federal agency, USAID and other non-governmental organizations, as needed. "This is what we are trained to do," said Army Maj. Gen. Simeon Trombitas. "We have the capabilities and the personnel needed to provide and sustain trained and ready army command and control headquarters for the full spectrum of military operations in Haiti." More than 150 Soldiers from Army South joined the soldiers currently on the ground in Haiti supporting Operation Unified Response. Support includes soldiers with specialties in engineering, medical support, operations, logistics, security and intelligence.

    FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas (Aug. 5, 2009) - The relentless Texas heat is no match for the Soldiers of U.S. Army South as they built the command and control infrastructure here for "Fuerzas Aliadas PANAMAX 2009", an exercise scheduled to take place later this year. The command and control center, known as the Deployable Joint Command and Control, is the information hub for Army South, joint sister services, and partner nation coalition personnel to plan and conduct operations during the exercise.

    Staff Sgt. Edmund Perez was awarded the Dept. of the Army's Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers President of the Year award during the annual BOSS conference in Leesburg, Va. Aug. 11. "I am very honored to have received this award," said Perez, who has been the Fort Sam Houston BOSS president for one year. Perez was previously the BOSS president for Camp Nimble, Bravo Co., 702nd Maintenance Support Battalion in Korea.
