Fort Sam Museum moving to new home at historic Quadrangle

The Fort Sam Houston Museum is getting a new home. The museum is slated to move to the east side of the U.S. Army North's historic Quadrangle in the fall and reopen in January 2014; it is currently housed at 1210 Stanley Rd. The new museum will take up almost the entire east wing of the structure. Renovation is scheduled to begin the end of February.

William Caldwell IV, commanding general, U.S. Army North, and senior commander, Fort Sam Houston and Camp Bullis, along with Command Sgt. Maj. Hu Rhodes and key Army North leaders. Austin told Caldwell that he was grateful for the hard work of Army North professionals during the military response to Hurricane Sandy. "You made us all proud," Austin said.

Senior enlisted leader 'takes the reins' at Army North

Command Sgt. Maj. Hu Rhodes returns "home" for service as the command sergeant major for U.S. Army North (Fifth Army) and as the senior enlisted leader for Fort Sam Houston and Camp Bullis. Rhodes originally joined the U.S. Army in 1975; after completing his tour of duty, he left the service and then rejoined a decade later in 1988. Little did he know then that his career in the Army would become a life-long service.

Hunting trip = therapy for 6 wounded warriors

Six wounded warriors spent the day in the woods of central Texas hunting exotic game Oct. 11 as a therapeutic retreat. Five of the wounded warriors, from the Warrior Transition Battalion, along with a wounded warrior who serves with U.S. Army North, took advantage of an opportunity to hunt an exotic animal of their choice, and to fish for Florida Bass, on a private central Texas game ranch.

Unique headquarters company inactivates after decade of service

From a small patio near the Fort Sam Houston horse stables, leaders, comrades, and loved ones said a fond farewell to a headquarters company that had overseen the base's Military Honors and Caisson platoons for a decade. Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Army Support Activity, inactivated Oct. 2 after 10 years of service following a quiet ceremony.

Army North, Mexican military leaders meet in Mexico City

Lt. Gen. William Caldwell IV, commanding general, U.S. Army North, met with Mexican counterparts Oct. 11 in Mexico City. While there, Caldwell thanked Mexican Gen. Guillermo Galvan for his role improving relations and interoperability between the two militaries during his tenure as the Mexican equivalent to the Secretary of Defense. Caldwell presented a certificate to Galvan during a ceremony at Secretaria de la Defensa Nacional headquarters Oct. 11 in Mexico City. Five Mexican army medical corps officers were presented certificates for their actions Sept. 19 when they helped to save the life of a local San Antonio man during dinner at a landmark San Antonio restaurant. The visiting doctors were eating dinner at the Tower of the Americas in downtown San Antonio when a man at a nearby table collapsed onto the floor. They quickly reacted and helped to save the choking man. Galvan will be relinquishing command at the end of the year.

New Chemical suit for Aviators

Soldiers from the 159th Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division become the first Army unit in the continental U.S. to receive the latest Joint Protective Aircrew Ensemble, Sept. 20, at Fort Campbell, Ky. The JPACE is a flame resistant, light weight, chemical and biological protective coverall that resembles a standard flight suit worn over the physical fitness uniform and consists of an inner CB lining attached to an outer shell.

While in the Quadrangle, members toured Army North's "Sentinel," a mobile command, control and communications vehicle that is deployed to disaster and emergency sites. The committee seeks to improve the welfare of service members and their families who live in the greater San Antonio area.

Fort Sam Houston bids farewell to retired Army leader

A solemn funeral procession with Army North's military caisson Soldiers on horseback and honor guard members slowly made their way to the pavilion Sept. 10 as family, friends and loved ones began to say their goodbyes to an honored Army leader. Retired Army Lt. Gen. Johnny Johnston was interred at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery Sept. 10; before retiring on Jan. 1, 1988, he served a 35-year infantry career in the Army that began as a draftee in the Korean War.

The Fort Sam Houston, U.S. Army North and San Antonio communities prepare to pay their respects to the survivors of fallen warriors at the Gold Star Mother's Day and Fallen Heroes Room of Remembrance Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Sept. 29. The ceremony will be held at the Survivor Outreach Services building at 1 p.m. and will honor their strength - and their loved ones' sacrifices.

With only weeks behind them since they wrapped up a huge national disaster exercise, service members and civilians from U.S. Army North geared up again and deployed to conduct response and recovery operations for Hurricane Isaac. Elements from U.S. Army North deployed Aug. 27 and 28 to preposition at various locations around Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida to support local, state and federal authorities in operations such as medical evacuation and treatment, logistics support, transportation, communications and many others.

One of last mounted cavalry scouts from WWII gets Cavalry medallion

Lt. Gen. William Caldwell IV inducted retired Col. Ernest John "Jack" Davis into the Order of St. George Medallion during a ceremony Aug. 15. The Order of St. George Medallion is the top award presented to members of the Army's mounted force by the U.S. Armor Association. Davis, 88, is one of the last remaining service members who served on horseback during WWII. During the ceremony, Caldwell, along with Col. Bill Hill II, inducted Davis at the Army Retirement Community auditorium in San Antonio. Davis began his career as an infantryman in the 10th Mountain Division and served 31 years, to include serving through WWII and the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

Community leaders support Army North exercise

For some, it may appear that a major military training event could be a burden on the local communities that surround training events. Others may see the increase in traffic or the increase in noise associated with military training as burdensome. And although a small percentage of a community may not necessarily be happy when a military exercise comes near their area, such is not the case for the county and business leaders of Jennings County, Ind. The business and county leaders said they truly looked forward to the July 26 kickoff of Vibrant Response 13, which is projected to infuse an estimated $6.5 million of business into the surrounding communities.

With less than 24 hours until the notional detonation of a 10-kiloton nuclear device in a major Midwestern city, military exercise specialists were putting the final touches on a national catastrophic incident exercise that will test more than 9,000 service members and civilians in 11 training locations and airfields spread across 5,000 square miles in southern Indiana and northern Kentucky. Exercise control specialists from U.S. Army North made final preparations July 25 for Vibrant Response 13, a major field exercise conducted by U.S. Northern Command and led by Army North. Service members and civilians from the military and other federal agencies throughout the country are training to respond in the event of a catastrophic domestic incident.

A remarkable day of celebration was made more momentous with the opening of the historic Quadrangle to the San Antonio and Fort Sam Houston military and civilian communities June 14. U.S. Army commands at Fort Sam Houston held an open house for all to come and join in the celebration of the Army's 237th birthday following a first ever run to the Alamo. The run consisted of more than 1,500 troops within the various Fort Sam Houston Army commands and units.

More than a thousand people turned out for the inaugural "Here's to our Heroes" Armed Forces Day river parade in downtown San Antonio May 19. The parade opened at the Arneson River Theater May 19 and featured 25 river floats, representing all branches of the military, veterans, military support groups and more, in honor of Armed Forces Day.
