Chief of Chaplains, Servicemembers celebrate 100 years chaplain assistants

On Dec. 28, 1909, General Order No. 253, War Department, Washington D.C., established the job of the chaplain assistant. It stated that "one enlisted man will be detailed on special duty, by the commanding officer of any organization to which a chaplain is assigned to duty, for the purpose of assisting the chaplain in the performance of his official duties."
