Brig. Gen. (Ret.) John W. Nicholson stands in front of a Full Honor Review formation at Fort Myer\'s Conmy Hall to receive the Silver Star for valor in combat Dec. 27, 1963, while serving as a military advisor in Vietnam. The award recommendation, made when Nicholson was a captain, was never acted on. Nicholson went on to a 30-year career in the Army followed by service as head of the National Cemetery Administration and National Battle Monuments Commission. In his remarks, Nicholson recalled telling an NCO bandsmember while conducting funerals with the Old Guard in Arlington National Cemetery: "Brownie, if I could march like this everyday, I'd stay a lieutenant for the rest of my career."
