Lt. Gen. (Ret.) John Cushman pins a Silver Star on the uniform of Brig. Gen. (Ret.) John W. Nicholson for valor in combat while advising an Army of Vietnam Civil Guard unit Dec. 27, 1963. Nicholson, following a fierce firefight, rallied the remaining force to rescue wounded ARVN Soldiers and retreat tactically to the safety of a field command post. Cushman, a regional advisor in the southern province where Nicholson was assigned, investigated the incident and recommended the award 46 years earlier. The Military District of Washington hosted the ceremony at Conmy Hall, Fort Myer, Va., in fron of Soldiers of the 3rc U.S. Infantry (The Old Guard), one of Nicholson's first assignments after graduating with the U.S. Military Academy Class of 1956.
