Soot-covered gloves rest in a firefighter's hardhat after a controlled burn on prairie and grassland on Fort Lewis. This summer, Fort Lewis Fish and Wildlife Department has teamed up with Fort Lewis Fire Department, Fort Lewis Forestry Department and The Nature Conservancy to conduct prescribed burns on some of the 12,000 acres of prairie on post in an effort to rid them of invasive species like Scotch broom.
