SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii - With a lei-bedecked picture of Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole in the foreground, Dr. Mitchell Eli shares the once-secret ancient Hawaiian martial art known as lua with leaders of the Army and the Royal Hawaiian Societies at the Nehelani on Aug. 29. Eli, an olohe (master) lua, had been invited on post by Annelle Amaral, Native Hawaiian Liaison for U.S. Army Garrison-Hawaii, as part of the monthly Native Hawaiian Lecture Series. Prince Kuhio was also a lua master, and had passed his knowledge of the fighting art on to Charles Kenn, who later accepted Eli as one of his pupils.
