Essex Performs Flight Deck Qualifications with Royal Thai Navy

GULF OF THAILAND (Feb. 10, 2009) - Quartemaster Seaman Elvis Gomez of Manhattan, N.Y. and assigned to amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) plot course changes while standing bridge watch as Lt. j.g. Kitti Kittiphongwiwat of the Royal Thai Navy looks on, Essex is participating in Cobra Gold 2009, an annual Thailand and U.S. co-sponsored multinational military exercise designed to train Thai, U.S. and Singapore Coalition Task Force personnel. Essex, commanded by Capt. Brent Canady, is the lead ship of the only forward-deployed expeditionary strike group and serves as the flagship for CTF 76, the Navy's only forward-deployed amphibious force commander. Task Force 76 is headquartered at White Beach Naval Facility, Okinawa, Japan, with a detachment in Sasebo, Japan.
