Matthew McCarthy, commander, Company D, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade, after a ceremony Aug. 1, 2014, honoring Poland's 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising. The Warsaw Uprising was a resistance movement against Nazi Germany during World War II, which lasted from Aug. 1, 1944, through Oct. 2, 1944, and resulted in nearly 200,000 deaths. U.S. and Canadian paratroopers were invited to participate in the ceremony as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, combined military forces training designed to foster cohesive relationships between allies and demonstrate a commitment to NATO obligations.
