New York Army National Guard Lt. Col. James Gonyo, the commander of the 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry, on St. Patrick's Day in 2013, leads his officers and guests in the traditional Irish whiskey toast to the regiment that kicks off events on St. Patrick's Day. Around his neck he wears the crucifix carried by poet Joyce Kilmner -- the author of the poem "Trees" -- who was killed in action while serving with the 69th Infantry in France during World War I
