Lt. Gen. Perry Wiggins, along with several students from the Fort Sam Houston Elementary School, officially opened the holiday season here by lighting the holiday tree Dec. 4 during the annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony at the base main flag pole. The students were recognized with certificates for their remarkable character and efforts during the fall semestar just before joining Wiggins in flipping the big switch to set the tree blazing with holiday lights. "This is a time where families get together and celebrate," said Wiggins, commanding general for U.S. Army North (Fifth Army) and senior commander for Fort Sam Houston and Camp Bullis, "which is really an opportunity for us to be together and rekindle friendships and be together as family. And it's an exciting moment for children. So today is an exciting time. On behalf of the school and these great kids, I want to thank them for all that they do for our children here at Fort Sam Houston." Music for the ceremony was provided by the 323rd Army Band "Fort Sam's Own."
