Armor plates' ballistics protection scrutinized for Soldier safety

The left sample (three-inch friction stir weld) was a part of a developmental weld that was used to derive the parameters to weld the final test plate. This sample was sectioned and polished to examine the macrostructure and verify the soundness of the weld. The tool on the right is a typical FSW tool with featureless shoulder and a pin containing multiple threads and flats that was used to fabricate the 1.5-inch thick aluminum test plates. The rotating tool is plunged between two aluminum plates and traverses along the joint to create the FSW test plate.
