New York Army National Guard soldier Sgt. Martin Gonzalez receives applause after being awarded the New York State Medal of Valor in a ceremony at Camp Smith, N.Y., on Nov. 17. Col. Reginald Sanders, the commander of the 369th Sustainment Brigade (right), presented the award to Gonzalez. While working as a police officer for the village of Liberty, N.Y. in 2011, Gonzalez and two other officers helped rescue two people trapped in a collapsed building. The Medal of Valor is presented for acts of valor, heroism, courage or gallantry in either a civilian or a military capacity, and is the highest state award a member of the National Guard can receive.
