FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas - Dan Franklin speaks to members of the U.S. Army North (Fifth Army) community about patriotism and service Sept. 5 during the Army North prayer luncheon in the historic Quadrangle. During his talk, Franklin reminded his audience that, while service and patriotism are linked, they are not limited to those who wear a uniform. "True patriots serve," said Franklin. "There is joy in life and joy in service." He then reminded the audience that Mother Theresa, who died on Sept. 5, 1997, had dedicated her life to serving the poor in India. "After she died, she was carried through the streets of Calcutta on the same gun carriage that carried Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru because she was recognized by the Indian people, not for military service but through service to her people." Franklin is a retired Army chaplain who served at Army North twice in his career, the first time as the deputy command chaplain from 2002 to 2004 and the second as the command chaplain from 2007 to 2010.
