He and several other cavalry scouts from Blue Platoon, Bravo "Black Knight" Troop, 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division were observing the voting booth in the village of Urmul during the Afghan elections, held Aug. 20, 2009. No one showed up to vote, according to then-Sgt. 1st Class Jonathan Hill, Blue Platoon's sergeant, and Keating was attacked with a B-10 and two rocket-propelled grenades that day.
