Then-Spc. Ty Carter conducts reconnaissance from the highest point of Observation Post Fritsche, where he was assigned in late spring/early summer 2009 with Blue Platoon, Bravo "Black Knight" Troop, 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. That summer, Carter and his fellow Soldiers rotated to Combat Outpost Keating, which sat on the low ground in the valley below and was nearly overrun Oct. 3, 2009. During the battle, Carter repeatedly exposed himself to overwhelming enemy fire to rescue a wounded comrade, Spc. Stephan Mace, actions for which he will be awarded the Medal of Honor in an Aug. 26 White House ceremony.
