Sgt. Ryan Thaxton, a native of Savannah, Ga., and a team leader for Company A, 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment "Battlekings", 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, moves quickly to disassemble and reassemble an M-240 machine gun during a timed test which was part of his assessment during the 2nd ABCT's first Pre-Ranger course here April, 24. He is on his second from last day of his assessment, which was over a month long. The course started with 16 candidates but only two others made it as far as Thaxton did that day. The course is designed to prepare and to ascertain readiness of Soldiers wishing to attend Ranger School. Right now the Army is experiencing a shortage of Rangers, and the founders of this program are hoping that it will increase the successful pass rate of Spartans wanting to go to Ranger School.
