Aaron Schad, a University of North Texas graduate student, installs a cage this past winter to protect a new mitigation planting in southeastern Dallas from predators while Marinda Griffin, a UNT student intern, observes. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Fort Worth District mitigation program is testing different planting techniques to improve survivability rates such as protecting some plants from local predators like feral hogs. The plantings mitigate loss of woody plants elsewhere with by planting acorn, nut and fruit bearing trees that create a better habitat for wildlife nearby.
