Spc. John Shilibear, a chemical specialist assigned to the 20th Support Command (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and high-yield explosives or CBRNE) monitors projected images cast from an advanced ground sample collection platform during a robotic test at the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center, Ind, Aug. 6. Shilibear, a native of Sumter, S.C., remotely controlled the robotic system during the test phase. The robotic system, developed by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, is designed to allow operational forces to perform radiation reconnaissance and ground sampling missions after a nuclear detonation. The robotic system can be controlled manually or remotely. This reduces the need to send soldiers into a contaminated area.
