Army announces fiscal year 2012 environmental award winners

Prescribed fire is especially important for land management at the installation because of previous mismanagement by the coal company. Though laws were in place requiring coal companies to replant land that had been strip mined, but they did not mandate the kinds of vegetation required. As a result, most of what was planted prior to the Kentucky Army National Guard's acquisition of the property were non-native and invasive plants; prescribed fire helps to eradicate and control these species in order to promote native species growth.
