Combat engineer Sgt. Daniel Ritchie detonates an insurgent's improvised explosive device while conducting route clearance, July 23, 2012, along Highway 1 in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan. Ritchie serves with 1st Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division. Because of the sniper threat in the area, Ritchie and his fellow engineers have "sterilized" their uniforms of rank to mask the unit's leadership.
