FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas - U.S. Army North's Salute Battery Soldiers fire volleys from 75mm M1A1 howitzers for the interment of retired Lt. Gen. Johnny Johnston Sept. 10 at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. The ceremony with full military honors included a procession with the caisson, honor guard and "Fort Sam's Own" 323rd Army Band, 15 volleys from the Salute Battery, a 21-gun salute from the firing party and a brief interment ceremony at the pavilion. Johnston began his distinguished 35-year infantry career in the Army as a draftee in the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Beverly Hale Johnston; his son, Greg Johnston; his daughter, Katherine Pittman; and eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
