Now-New York City Fire Department Lt. Thor Johannessen (far left) poses with fellow firefighters from Special Operations Company Rescue 1 in their truck. Rescue 1 is responsible for rescuing other firefighters, as well as victims of major disasters, such as a plane crash or a train derailment. The company lost 11 of its 27 members on Sept. 11, 2001, including the company commander and senior lieutenant, after the World Trade Center's North Tower collapsed. Johannessen later joined the New York National Guard, where he is a captain, and has since used his search and rescue experience to help victims of the 2010 Haiti earthquake.
