Jason Owen, Vehicle Technology Directorate, describes the algorithms for a Kinect-based mapping and localization as the kBot robot moves autonomously around the VTD lab area. The Kinect sensor is a very low cost sensor from the gaming industry that provides both color and depth information enabling robots to construct and analyze 3-D images of their surroundings.
