FORT CARSON, Colo. " Fort Carson Soldiers, assigned to 52nd and 4th Engineer Battalions, assist efforts to contain the Waldo Canyon Fire at the U.S. Air Force Academy, June 28, 2012. The engineers used bulldozers and support vehicles to create strips of cleared earth called firebreaks, ranging from 8 to 100-feet wide, to stop the wildfire's progress. The engineers arrived at the Air Force Academy, June 27, clearing strips of land of all vegetation to stop the wildfire from spreading into the academy grounds. During the first 72 hours of the mission, engineers cleared more than 12 miles of land.
