FORT CARSON, Colo. " Staff Sergeant Erick Lappi (front), and Sgt. 1st Class Justin Payne, both horizontal construction engineers, assigned to 576th Engineer Company, 4th Engineer Battalion, build a firebreak during efforts to contain the Waldo Canyon Fire at the U.S. Air Force Academy, June 28, 2012. Firebreaks, long pieces of land stripped of vegetation, halt a fire's progress by eliminating its fuel. During the first 72 hours of the mission, Fort Carson engineers cleared more than 12 miles of land. (U.S. Army photo by Pfc. Andrew Ingram, 4th Inf. Div. PAO)
