Maj. Gen. James L. Hodge greets two Hopewell World War II veterans at Monday's annual Memorial Day observance at the City Point National Cemetery. Herndon Smith, left, and Thomas R. Blount, also a former Hopewell mayor, were among a number of veterans and citizens attending the function sponsored by the Jacob J. Pearson Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 637, American Legion Post 146 and Veterans of the Vietnam War Post 6. Hodge, CASCOM and Fort Lee commander, was the keynote speaker. A brass quintet from the Fort Lee 392nd Army Band performed patriotic music, and a color guard from the Noncommissioned Officers Academy at the Army Logistics University posted and retired the colors.
