The Civilian Award for Humanitarian Service was presented to Dept. of the Army employee Wanda C. Squirewell for courageous actions taken to save the life of another woman in Arlington, Va. July 2, 2011. Squirewell heard screaming coming from a bridge railing, ran towards the screams to investigate, and found a woman hanging by her hands. Not thinking of her personal safety, Squirewell hung over the railing to stabilize the suspended woman and waited for help to arrive. She was presented the award by Maj. Gen. Michael S. Linnington, commanding general of the Joint Force Headquarters-National Capital Region and the U.S. Army Military District of Washington at a ceremony held at Fort McNair, March 20, 2012.
