From 'Rocket Boy' to Vietnam

Then-1st Lt. Homer Hickam poses on one of the tanks he was responsible for repairing while assigned to Company C, 704th Maintenance Battalion, 4th Infantry Division in the South Vietnam highlands from 1967-1968. These tanks were critical in keeping the roads clear for supply convoys and Soldiers. The east-west Highway 19, which Hickam served along, was a particular favorite for North Vietnamese and Viet Cong ambushes.
