Corporal Salvatore Barraveccia, who drew a wall mural in the De Schark cave, clearly intended to finish writing in the date. Many were confident that the war would end by Christmas, it appears Barraveccia left "194_" on the chance that it wouldn't end in 1944 but was never able to return and finish writing in the date.
