Pfc. Matt Leyva, with his parents Ed and Rene Sochia and his sister Ashley, poses for a picture in early October at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. Leyva was deployed to Afghanistan with 2nd Battalion, 34th Armor Regiment, 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division when he stepped on a pressure-plate improvised explosive device Aug. 9. The blast caused injuries that cost the 21-year-old Soldier both of his legs and four of his fingers. This photo was taken the day that Leyva was able to sit up for the first time since being injured.
