Wreckage, flames and smoke serve as the aftermath of a simulated 10-kiloton nuclear detonation here Aug. 16, 2011, during Vibrant Response 12, a multi-agency, multi-component exercise. U.S. Army North is conducting the exercise Aug. 16-28 to prepare federal military forces for their role in responding to a catastrophic chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear incident in the homeland. The exercise brings together more than 7,000 Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Department of Defense civilians to rehearse DoD support to civil authorities in a consequence management role.
