Thousands of U.S. troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan have been bitten by sand flies, which can cause cutaneous leishmaniasis, a skin ulcer lesion. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command worked for years to find a test to aid in the diagnosis of the disease. The test, called the SMART Leish PCR assay has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
